5 Things to do in Estes Park This Winter
The Rockies have lots of snow and slopes for sledding and tubing in the winter, with some closer to Denver than you might think! For a fun family day, visit Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park. Once a family ski area, Hidden Valley since been re-developed by the Park into a wonderful sledding area that is easily accessed by car. A picnic pavilion provides shelter (along with 14 picnic tables), and there’s also a winter warming room. Sled rentals are available for $5 per day at Estes Park Mountain Shop and at The Warming House. on the Hwy 34 entrance to Estes Park. When the kids get cold and tired, head into Estes Park for a hot chocolate and a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in town.
2.) Wine tasting
Located in the heart of beautiful Estes Park, Colorado, Snowy Peaks Winery offers samples of their own award-winning, handcrafted wines along with wines from some of Colorado’s best boutique wineries. The winery carries gourmet foods made by Colorado artisans to complement your wine selection, along with handmade chocolates, unique jams and jellies and small batch sodas and fruit ciders for the non-wine drinkers. Go ahead and bring the kids! They will have a great time in the “No Wine-ing Zone”, (the Winery’s designated playroom), while you relax and enjoy your wine tasting. They can even partake in a free juice tasting!
Grab your snowshoes and hit the trails in Rocky Mountain National Park! The stillness and serenity to be found on a winter’s day in the park is unlike anything else, waiting for you each time you pause on your way through the forests and past frozen lakes and waterfalls. Some popular winter destinations include Cub Lake, Mills Lake, and the Bear Lake Loop.
4.) Enjoy a romantic dinner
Visit Twin Owls Steakhouse on a chilly winter evening. We open Friday – Sunday at 5pm and can offer a romantic ambiance unlike any other, with stone fireplaces in each of our dining rooms and stunning views of the Mummy Range at sunset. With a wide array of menu choices, everyone in your party will be able to find something they will enjoy (even the little ones). We also offer a well-stocked wine cellar and a full service bar. 5.) Stroll through town
Take a walk down Elkhorn Ave. Grab a warm drink and stroll through the stores. Pick up a book and some taffy. Whatever you fancy, during the winter months things slow down and there is a calmness that allows you to enjoy the town of Estes Park in a way you cannot during the bustling summer months.
