One of the perks of working in the wedding industry is that you get to try a lot of delicious desserts. We are always amazed at the beautiful creations that each baker and decorator creates for our couples, and the Colorado Rose Cake Company makes some of our very favorites. We are always excited to hear that they will provide one of their cakes for a Twin Owls wedding; not only do they offer a wide array of flavors, but their unique designs never ceases to amaze us! Shown above is one of their signature styles; a celebration of the beauty of the Rocky Mountains, and the perfect centerpiece for a true Colorado wedding!
We asked the owner, Heidi some questions about her journey and below are her responses:
Can you tell us a little about the history of Colorado Rose Cake Co?
My amazing and talented mother Marci Perrotto started Colorado Rose Cake Co. in 1997. I’ve worked with her on and off for the last 16 years but took time off while getting a degree at CSU and then teaching for 3 years. I came back full-time in 2011, and since then, we’ve become a well-oiled machine. Last year, my mom decided it was time to retire. My husband supported me taking over the business since it’s been such a passion for so long and he knew I would feel lost without it. Now, I get to continue on with such an important part of my mom and her legacy; honestly, I can only hope my family will want to continue it after me.
How did you get started with Colorado Rose?
It’s not a very exciting tale of how I got started; it was more that I couldn’t escape it since the bakery is built in my mom’s basement. I seemed to have quite the knack for it, though, and through the years I’ve come to love so much about what I do.
What is your favorite part of being a baker?
The baking part is not my favorite. I focus more on the cake design part. I’m so excited to really let my creativity come out. I am excited about the things I see and get inspired by, the everyday beauty all around me, and having an avenue to fully express that excitement is amazing. The other part I love about what I do is connecting with couples and sharing in their love and excitement.
Do you have a favorite wedding memory from your years in business?
I don’t get to be a part of the weddings other than to create their cakes, and the hardest part for me is not getting to see the reactions. As a surprise, one bride ordered a true-to-size Darth Vader mask. It was the most stressful thing I had ever made up to that point, but it turned out incredible. Unfortunately, I couldn’t deliver that one and didn’t get to see his reaction. The venue took pictures for me, however, and sent them in real time. It made my day and his reaction and excitement when he saw the cake made me cry. I get a little attached to my creations. It’s a labor of love.
What is your favorite flavor you offer?
I get asked this all the time and never know how to answer. I’m the type that likes different things depending on the mood I’m in. I love our Lavender with honey for something light and subtle. For something rich, I go to our banana chocolate chip. For something that is comforting, our Cinnamon bun is the answer. Light and fruity are Strawberry or Lemon. I’m always open to trying new combinations and get excited thinking up new flavors.
Can you explain what couples can expect when they book with you? What will their experience be like?
Before booking, I usually meet with the couple for a tasting. I give generous flavor options to try and we talk over the choices and the look you want for your big day. From there, once the orders in my hands, the pressure is off of you. You can relax and enjoy your day to the fullest, knowing I’ve got every detail we talked about taken care of.
